How To Get Rid of Chipmunks: Everything You Need To Know

Hey guys,

I get lots of emails from visitors to this website asking ‘how do I get rid of chipmunks‘?

Although, I’ve shared many techniques for getting rid of chipmunks throughout these pages (one technique per post), it can be a difficult to find exactly which method is right for you because of the way the blog is laid out.

So, I’ve decided to pull all the information together into one big post that describes all the ways I know to get rid of chipmunks along with my recommendations on which ones are the most effective.

So, How Do You Get Rid of Chipmunks?

Perhaps the first decision you need to make when deciding on your chipmunk removal method is whether you want to kill the chipmunks or not.

Lethal methods of getting rid of chipmunks tend to be more effective, however it can be distressing to some people knowing that are responsible for the chipmunk’s death, so humane methods are necessary. Also, depending on your locality, it may be illegal to kill chipmunks, so using humane techniques may be your only option.

Other factors you will need to take into account when deciding on the best way to get rid of a chipmunk are:

  • Cost – some methods require you to purchase equipment
  • Cleanliness – some methods are messier and produce more blood and gore than others
  • Time – some methods take longer than others
  • Effectiveness – some methods work better than others

For each technique below, I give you a rating of each of these factors and for convenience, they are ordered from most effective at the top to least effective at the bottom.

Electric Chipmunk Traps

Humane/Lethal: LETHAL
Effectiveness: ***** (5 stars)
Cost: * (1 star)
Cleanliness : **** (4 stars)
Time: **** (4 stars)

Electric traps are the quickest and most effective way of getting rid of chipmunks, however it is also the most expensive.

These traps work by enticing a chipmunk into a rectangular box with bait, which triggers a mechanism that passes a bolt of electricity through the chipmunk’s body, killing it instantly.

Electric Chipmunk Trap

Electric Chipmunk Trap

The Rat Zapper (pictured above) is one of the best electric chipmunk traps on the market. It costs around $45 and has the additional cost of batteries required to power it. A single set of batteries can manage up to 30 chipmunk kills, so it should be enough to wipe out your infestation.

It is very simple to set up – just put it somewhere that the chipmunks hang out and add some bait – and check on it the next to to remove any dead chipmunks. Removing the chipmunk’s corpse from the trap is as simple as tilting it over your garbage can and it will slide out, so it is much cleaner than traditional spring-loaded mousetrap-style traps.

Humane Chipmunk Traps

Humane/Lethal: HUMANE
Effectiveness: **** (4 stars)
Cost: ** (2 stars)
Cleanliness : **** (4 stars)
Time: *** (3 stars)

Humane chipmunk traps are the most effective humane method of chipmunk control, although they can be quite costly and time consuming.

Again, the chipmunk is baited into the trap, but instead of being killed, the door slams shut behind it capturing it within a cage. The chipmunk can then be released back into the wild (as far away from your yard as possible).

Humane Chipmunk Trap

Humane Chipmunk Trap

The humane chipmunk trap pictured above is manufactured by a company called HavaHart, who specialise in creating humane traps for rodents and other mammals.

It costs around $35 so is quite expensive (although there other models around the $20 price tag) but it is very effective at catching chipmunks.

Obviously, this method can be quite time consuming because after catching the chipmunk you will have to travel somewhere far away to let it go (at least 3 miles away is recommended).

Water Bucket Chipmunk Traps

Humane/Lethal: LETHAL
Effectiveness: *** (3 stars)
Cost: ***** (5 stars)
Cleanliness : *** (3 stars)
Time: ** (2 stars)

The Bucket of Water trap is one of the cheapest chipmunk traps available because it uses items that most folk already have in their yard.

1 gallon bucket

1 gallon bucket

Just fill a gallon bucket with water and sprinkle pumpkin seeds on the surface. The idea is that a chipmunk will attempt to grasp at the bait, fall in and drown. It is recommended that you also rest a piece of wood between the rim of the bucket and the ground to provide the chipmunk with a sort of gangplank. Also, scatter a few more pumpkin seeds on the wood and the ground around the bucket.

Although this method is cost-effective, results can vary depending on how wily your particular chipmunks are and it can take a while to set up. In addition, you will need to fish out the dead chipmunks and transfer them to your trash can, which can be a little messy – wear gloves and use a fishing net if you have one to avoid direct contact.

Get a Cat

Humane/Lethal: BOTH
Effectiveness: *** (3 stars)
Cost: *** (3 stars)
Cleanliness : *** (3 stars)
Time: ** (2 stars)

Having a cat living with you can provide all sorts of benefits, including their ability to scare chipmunks away and kill them.

Cat

Cat

This method has been listed as both humane and lethal because the presence of a cat can be enough to scare chipmunks out of your yard but if the cat does catch one, it will kill it.

This is the only real lethal method of chipmunk removal that you can use if you are in a region that has outlawed chipmunk killing.

The costs of owning a cat over its entire lifetime (food etc.) is a lot more expensive than any of the other techniques, so I would recommend only using this method if you are looking for a family pet as well.

Traditional Chipmunk Traps

Humane/Lethal: LETHAL
Effectiveness: *** (3 stars)
Cost: *** (3 stars)
Cleanliness : * (1 star)
Time: *** (3 stars)

Traditional spring-loaded chipmunk traps take the same design as a traditional mousetrap (albeit a little bigger to cater for the chipmunk’s size).

The chipmunk tries to get the bait from the trap and triggers a mechanism that brings a metal bar crashing down on it’s skull.

Spring Loaded Chipmunk Trap

Spring Loaded Chipmunk Trap

The spring-loaded trap pictured above costs around $7.

Although they are cheaper than other manufactured chipmunk traps, they are a lot messier. However they are effective, so if you don’t mind cleaning up the blood and gore created when this trap is sprung, it makes an ideal solution to your chipmunk problem.

Decoys

Humane/Lethal: HUMANE
Effectiveness: ** (2 stars)
Cost: *** (3 stars)
Cleanliness : ***** (5 stars)
Time: ***** (5 stars)

Decoys are quick to deploy and leave no mess (in fact they can enhance the aesthetics of your yard) but success of getting rid of chipmunks using this method is a bit hit-and-miss.

Owl Decoy

Owl Decoy

The Owl Decoy pictured above costs around $15 and the very sight of it can cause chipmunks to leave your yard.

Chipmunk Repellents

Humane/Lethal: HUMANE
Effectiveness: ** (2 stars)
Cost: **** (4 stars)
Cleanliness : *** (3 stars)
Time: *** (3 stars)

Chipmunk repellents, such as fox urine, are cheap but effectiveness can vary. It can also be a bit messy and time-consuming.

Although some people have had great success using this method, it is not one I would recommend.

How To Get Rid of Chipmunks: Using An Owl Decoy

Hey guys,

Just a quick post to tell you a little bit about using owl decoys as a method of getting rid of chipmunks.

Click here for a comprehensive list of all ways to get rid of chipmunks.

Owl (and hawk) decoys are realistic life-sized models of birds of prey that are natural predators of chipmunks.

By positioning a decoy strategically in your yard, it is possible to scare chipmunks and other rodents away from your property because their natural instinct when seeing one of these creatures is to flee.

There are lots of varieties of decoys giving a range of functionality (click here to check them out).

The least expensive are simply static models but as the cost increases, so do the special effects. Some have eyes that glow in the dark or light up and others make a periodic screeching sound. Still others flap their wings.

As well as getting rid of chipmunks, they have the dual benefit of making good-looking garden ornament, however their effectiveness can be somewhat hit-and-miss. If you’re serious about getting rid of your chipmunk infestation, then you should consider using chipmunk traps (either humane or lethal), which are the most effective way of controlling chipmunks.

How To Make a Home-Made Chipmunk Trap

Hey guys,

Just a quick post today to share with you a video I found about constructing a homemade chipmunk trap.

You may remember me discussing the ‘bucket of water’ trap in my article about chipmunk traps. Well, this video shows you exactly how to build it (it only takes 5 minutes to construct and you should have all the materials you need around your home).

How to get rid of chipmunks using other methods

How To Get Rid of Chipmunks With Repellents

Hey guys,

In this post, I’m going to be sharing with you three types of chipmunk repellent, however it is important to realize that results vary wildly when using this method to get rid of chipmunks. Check out this post for other more effective methods of getting rid of chipmunks.

Although many people have reported great success using repellents to get rid of chipmunks, an equal number of folk have reported no improvement at all to their chipmunk infestation!

Chipmunk traps have a much better success rate.

Chipmunk Repellent #1: Fox Urine

The fox is one of the chipmunk’s natural predators so if a chipmunk senses that a fox may be in the area, they may be encouraged to move home.

So scattering the scent of fox urine can sometimes repel chipmunks away.

Thankfully, you don’t have to go out and extract urine from a fox because there are a number of suppliers of fox urine in both liquid and pellet form (don’t ask me how they extract it!).

Chipmunk Repellent #2: Cat Litter

Like foxes, cats are also one of the chipmunk’s natural enemies so a scattering of used cat litter around your yard can also repel chipmunks.

Used cat litter can be obtained from a friend or neighbor that owns a cat (they’ll be happy to get rid of it) and it will give the appearance of a cat being in the local vicinity.

Chipmunk Repellent #3: Mothballs

Some people have found that chipmunks have a disdain for mothballs, so scattering them around your yard in strategic locations can help drive them away.

I’ve had reports that stuffing mothballs into old socks works pretty well.

How To Get Rid of Chipmunks Using Traps

Hey guys,

In this first post, I want to discuss chipmunk traps.

There are a number of different types of chipmunk trap on the market and the model you purchase will depend on your budget and your personal feelings towards killing chipmunks and handling blood and gore.

But before I tell you about them, I’d like to share with you a simple inexpensive trap you can build at home.

The Bucket of Water Trap

Gallon Bucket

Gallon Bucket

All you need is a gallon bucket of water, a small plank of wood and some bait. For the bait, pumpkin seeds are ideal, however fruit, nuts, berries and other seeds that will float in water will also work.

Simply fill your bucket with water and rest the plank against its rim. Then add bait to the water’s surface, along the plank and on the ground near the timber.

The plan is that the chipmunk will be enticed by the bait, walk up the plank and attempt to grab the bait from the water’s surface. The chipmunk then loses it’s balance, falls in the water and drowns.

This is an age-old method for getting rid of chipmunks that has been used for centuries, although results can vary depending on the species of chipmunk, how savvy they are and how many there are in the area.

The Spring-Loaded Trap

Spring Loaded Chipmunk Trap

Spring Loaded Chipmunk Trap

Although not as cheap as the ‘bucket of water’ trap, spring-loaded chipmunk trapsare still a relatively inexpensive solution to your chipmunk invasion.

Spring-loaded chipmunk traps are basically a slightly larger version of the traditional mousetrap. When the chipmunk tries to take the bait from the trap, it triggers a mechanism which causes a metal bar to come crashing down on it’s skull/spine, killing it instantly.

Due to the low costs of this type of trap and depending on the size of your chipmunk infestation, I would recommend purchasing between 4 and 10 spring-loaded traps to place strategically at different locations around your property. If you have been able to identify the entrance to your chipmunks tunnels, leave at least one of the loaded traps near to it, with the others being placed at locations that you have witnessed high chipmunk activity.

Due to the nature of these traps, there is the potential for a lot of blood and gore so spring-loaded traps are not recommended for anybody that has a weak stomach.

Fruits, berries, nuts, seeds, peanut butter and even dog food or cat food cat be used as a lure.

The Humane Trap

Humane Chipmunk Trap

Humane Chipmunk Trap

Humane trapsare so-called because they capture the chipmunk alive without killing it or harming it in any way.

They typically take the form of a rectangular metal cage with an opening on one of the sides. Bait is placed inside the trap and when the chipmunk enters to collect the food, it stands on a sensitive metal plate that causes the door to close behind it, ensuring it can’t get back out.

You can then release the chipmunk back into the wild (at least a couple of miles away from your property is recommended).

Although humane traps are more expensive than spring-loaded traps, they are very effective (although only one chipmunk can be caught in each trap at a time) and you will have peace of mind that you haven’t killed or caused suffering to the creature.

A note about two-door humane chipmunk traps: There are a number of double-door chipmunk traps available on the market, which many people assume can catch 2 chipmunks at once. Unfortunately, most of these 2-door humane traps will only catch one chipmunk at a time, the advantage of the two doors being that the chipmunk has two methods of entry into the trap.

The Electric Trap

Electric Chipmunk Trap

Electric Chipmunk Trap

Finally, we have the electric trap. This is the most expensive type of chipmunk trap available, however it is perhaps the most effective at getting rid of chipmunks.

Similar to the humane trap, the electric trap is a rectangular box, in which you place bait for the chipmunk. However, when the chipmunk enters instead of the door closing behind, a current of electricity is passed through the chipmunk’s body killing it instantly.

Electric traps are much cleaner than spring-loaded traps because there is no blood or gore to clean up and you do not even have to touch the chipmunk’s corpse at all – simply hold the electric trap over your garbage can and the body will slide out.

Summary

Now you know the four main types of trap you can use to get rid of chipmunks, it is time to decide which is right for you.

If you want the most effective solution, then the electric trap is recommended.

If you want the cheapest solution, the bucket of water trap is recommended.

If you want to get rid of chipmunks humanely, then the humane trap is recommended.

And, finally, if you want a good balance between cost and effectiveness, use the spring-loaded trap.

If you have any questions, queries or know of any other chipmunk traps that I’ve missed out, please leave me a comment below :)
